Thank you for choosing to support the LIFE PACK, the pack leaders are Blackberry, Smokey and Joey. Please read below to find out more information about this special pack of furkids.

You're never going to believe this folks, but I FOUND MY FUREVER HOME...just in time for the holidays! My family renamed me Jazzy. Here is what they have to say about me:

"Jazzy is the absolute best! I am so happy with her and very excited that she is doing so great. When I walked in this afternoon, I found one of my cats sharing the bed with Jazz; it was such a thrill to see. Jazz was basically hogging the bed and my cat Rusty was nuzzled along side of her. I guess she gets along with cats and I think she found a new best friend! As if that wasn't enough excitement for me in one day, there were no messes on the floor and she was so happy and excited to see me when I walked in, she really is such a good dog. I even left the garbage in the usual spot in my kitchen as a test and she didn't go near it - that truly won me over. I haven't had a dog in 18 years that hasn't torn apart the garbage given the chance!!! So as a reward, I had a piece of lamb in my freezer, which I boiled up and mixed it with her dry food. She really enjoyed it.   So...she really is doing great; she is very content and I am happy to have her. Everyone at the dog park loves her already and they are just so happy that I found such a great canine companion.

Ginny"

My name is Smokey. I was turned into a kill shelter by my owner late one rainy afternoon. I remember watching him walk away, without looking back. Why would he do that to me? I'm about 4 years old and have some Rottie, Shepherd and maybe even a little Chow in me.
I enjoy playing with other dogs and act like a puppy. I am a bit of lady’s man and tend to shower women with love and affection. Don’t get me wrong...dudes are okay too, but I definitely prefer the ladies and it will take time for me to trust another man again. I'm pretty sure I was abused in the past, but am trying to black that out, because the memories are too awful. Do you have room in your heart and home for me? I would make such a great addition to your family.

Let's get this out in the open. I'm deaf. That's right. I can't hear a thing. However, that doesn't mean I'm not an AWESOME dog. You may not be able to yell for me and I'll come running, but if you use your hands and motion for me to come, I'll be there in a flash. Look how handsome I am. I'm about 6 years old and currently in a boarding facility. I really need a home. Wouldn't I look great laying in front of your fireplace on a bear skin rug or cuddled up under the Christmas Tree?

Joey Update 1/10/08

Joey is now in a foster home and is doing very well. It appears that he was only temporarily deaf, because he is starting to respond to his name and basic commands. He has a beautiful whitish-tan coat and piercing blue eyes. He is crate trained, has a very loving, mellow personality and never barks. He loves being outside, even when it is really cold out, I guess that “husky’ coat keeps him nice and warm. He is a big mush and LOVES to cuddle! If you rub his ears, he melts down into the floor. He is also great with kids. He currently has one foster sister (6-year-old girl) who he adores. He also has a foster brother (a 14-year old beagle mix) who he gets along with most of the time, so he may just be selective about the dogs that he likes. He tends to be ok with dogs that are smaller than him. As far as his two feline foster brothers go, he would love to chase them around the house 24/7.

Ghost
For Joey the white Husky
By CSC 1/10/08

He walks with tender steps
Eyes dropped towards the ground
He fades into the distance
And doesn’t make a sound

It’s clear his history haunts him
He’s fragile and forlorn
He hovers just above the ground
Like a fog in early morn’

He’s an apparition
A vision cloaked in white
A translucent spirit
Afraid to step into the light

With the sun at his back
His contour seems to glow
A phantom silhouette
Whose shape begins to show

You reach out to touch him
You wonder if he’s real
As if your sense of sight
Must be confirmed by feel

Your touch grounds him
A connection is sparked
It travels up your limbs
And flows into your heart

His coat is luminous
His eyes aren’t turned away
He emerges from the shadows
Prepared to face the day

Joey Update 2/22/08

Joey has found his forever home!

Jazzy(Blackberry) is the first member of the life pack to get adopted. This is what it's all about! That girl has got a new home! Well, Joey and Smokey were ready to welcome a new pack member to the club, and leave it to Joey to find someone with special needs. They're kindred spirits! Introducing Elenor Roosevelt- and she has a story to tell.

Little Eleanor Roosevelt is a tan and black mixed breed dog weighing about 35 lbs and found Thanksgiving Eve on the FDR Drive (Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive) in New York City. She was frantic and was without the use of her back legs, so the obvoius guess it that she was hit by a car and left to fend for herself. A compassionate NYPD lieutenant helped protect the dog from running back into the road and two Board members from Shelter Showcase in New Jersey stopped at the scene and rushed the dog to the closest emergency hospital.

Eleanor, or fondly known as "Ellie", was treated at the Animal Medical Center in New York from Wednesday night to Friday evening, and she was then moved to Dr. Karen Dashfield's care at Fredon Animal Hospital. Dr. Karen has been caring for Ellie, and Ellie is proving herself as a determined little girl with love in her heart. The x-rays showed no spinal fracture, and her back was stable enough for Dr. Karen to remove Ellie's not-so-comfortable back splint, as well as Ellie's large e-collar (that annoying lamp shade looking contraption). Ellie is now more comfortable, and she can eat and drink more easily and give Dr. Karen kisses, which is becoming more common every day! Without the splint and e-collar, Ellie is also more encouraged to move around when her hind legs are supported.

With all this good news, we have one important piece of bad news to share with you. We are pretty certain that Ellie will never walk again using her back legs, but we also know Ellie will continue to become happier and stronger every day! Ellie will soon be fitted for a custom cart (a doggy wheelchair) from Eddie's Wheels for Pets in Massachusetts (http://www.eddieswheels.com). This will cost $400 and they will provide a 10% rescue discount and even post Ellie's picture and story on their website to help her find a home.

To strengthen Ellie's front legs to get ready for the cart, Ellie will attend physical therapy sessions at Canine Aquatics in Randolph, NJ. Canine Aquatics is NJ's Premier K-9 Swim and Fitness Center and generously donates therapy sessions to rescue animals in need. *UPDATE*

Ellie is making exciting progress in her recovery! Dr. Karen reports "rapid improvement" over the last 72 hours and a "huge difference" between yesterday and today!   Ellie has regained some sensation and minimal voluntary movement in her hind legs! Here's one of the new pics- check out more pics and her latest from the doctor at http://network.bestfriends.org/sheltershowcase/news/21007.html
